Energy, movement, flux, and flow… Over the last few weeks there has been a bit of radio airplay, some great blog radio exposure, and a lot of positive feedback on the recent CD release. Preparations are being made for a new and more interactive www.timkorry.com this week. We are looking forward to a St. Patrick’s Day unveiling! The new physical CD’s have been made and will be available on the new site along with an expanding catalog of music and merchandise in the upcoming Emporium. A special thanks again to artist John Hansen and producer Jeff Taylor for giving the look and sound of this album more depth & dimension.
Being an Indie musician can be a very challenging thing depending on your goals. If “what you put into it is what you get out of it”, work is constant and challenging. What does it take to “make it” in music? I’ve talked to a few local solo artists about just what is to be classified as successful. The stress of constantly pushing to connect with people can be quite intense when the artist is the one putting all the pieces of a marketing/management plan together on top of the actual writing and playing. Last year I had a chance to play a few shows with one of my favorite indie musicians. His advice was refreshing in its honesty and simplicity. Let me tell you that Pete Berwick is one of the more talented, nicest, and most down to earth people I have met in the music business. His advice was just to “enjoy what you are doing”, “Don’t lose the fun of performing”, and “play for yourself”. Success is different for everyone. It’s important not to forget the joy and anticipation that you felt at the beginning of the journey. It is too easy to get caught up in the plastic world of money glamour and fame that is paraded in front of our eyes every second of every day. It is all that we are fed through TV, radio, and magazines. It’s a great place to lose your soul.
As I move into the next phase of Tim Korry the rock band or Tim Korry the solo artist, I am trying not to lose Tim Korry the singer/songwriter, enjoyer of all things musical and expressive. There is so much more to do, contacts to make, music and video to create and shows to book. The one thing that never changes is the feeling of picking up a guitar or drum and playing from the heart. This is the most honest, cathartic, and basic way to express myself. It pays me more than I could ever monetarily make at a live engagement. As creative people, we build everything up so we can step back, look at it, and then strip it away again to reveal its true essence. THIS is Independent music, art, film, and writing. This is where it all starts and ends.
